神社の死は近年起こりうる現実である。原因は宗教が社会に与える影響力の減少と、それによる神社のハードの維持のための、修繕費用がないことが多い。多くの神社でマンションやホテルの建設が起こるが、それはハードの維持のためだ。本来神社がつくっていた風景を享受していた住民にとって、心理的・物理的に神社からは遠ざかり、「神社と私」或いは「神社と地域」の当事者性の稀薄化は加速する。⁡

⁡神社は風景の大きな要素だ。現代でも初詣やお祭りなど、社会的義務を与える場であることは変わらない。そんな神社に現代建築には何が可能か。私たちは一過性な神社との関係ではなく、物理的なものを媒介して、神社と共生する関係を築く建築を提案する。⁡

そこで神社建築の物理的な維持に必要な木材に着目した。伐採から乾燥・保存・製材は時間をかけて行われ、日の目を見るまでに長い時間がかかる。ただ木材を眠らせておくのではなく、空間を見出して新たな価値を与えられないだろうか。次第に蓄えられた木材が神社建築に置換され、古材は屋根を支える一員となる。長い年月を経て新しい建築と古い建築が木材を介して混成していく。そしてその営みは次世代へつながる。一枚の板が木材と支え合うことで、空間を生み、風景を成し、営みのきっかけとなる。

The death of the shrine is a recent reality. The cause is often a decline in the influence of religion on society and the resulting lack of funds to repair and maintain the hardware of shrines.
Many shrines are building condominiums and hotels, but these are measures to maintain the hardware. Residents who originally enjoyed the landscape created by shrines are now psychologically and physically more distant from the shrines, and the "shrine and I" or "shrine and community" relationship between the residents and the shrines is becoming rare.
Shrines are a major element of the landscape. What is possible in contemporary architecture for shrines? Rather than a relationship with shrines that is only about content, we propose an architecture that builds a symbiotic relationship with shrines through the medium of physical objects.
We focused on the wood necessary for the physical upkeep of shrine architecture. From logging to drying, preserving, and sawing is a time-consuming process that takes a long time before it sees the light of day. Rather than just letting the lumber lie dormant, could we find space in it and give it new value?
Gradually, the stored lumber is replaced in the shrine building, and the old lumber from joins in as a member of the roof support. Over the years, new architecture and old architecture are blended through the use of wood. And this activity will continue into the next generation. A single board creates space, forms a landscape, and becomes a catalyst for activity.
